DARBY
CORPORATE SOLUTIONS (DCS) SELECTS APPLIED DATA SYSTEMS'
SINGLE BOARD COMPUTER
AS
WINDOWS CE/ STRONGARM ENGINE FOR NEW WIRELESS COMMUNICATION
PLATFORM
SAN JOSE (September
27, 1999) -- Applied Data Systems (ADS) announced today
that its RISC-based single-board computer, the Thin Client,
has been selected by Darby Corporate Solutions, Inc. (DCS)
as the engine for Diplomat, DCS' new two-way wireless
communication platform.
Diplomat's premiere
software application is an integrated solution that tracks
and manages mobile assets/vehicles. With Diplomat, companies
can seamlessly integrate wireless communications into
their operations. Diplomatâs powerful combination of features
includes two-way data exchange, 24x7 information access
from any PC or laptop with Internet access, and the ability
to geographically locate a mobile asset / vehicleâs position,
see its historical path and monitor its status such as
speed and temperature fluctuations.
"Knowing where
a companyâs vehicles and mobile assets, such as construction
equipment, are located at all times provides managers
with improved customer response times and asset security,"
said Larry Waller, CTO and Vice President of DCS. "The
primary reason that we wanted to work with Applied Data
Systems (ADS) is that they were able to assemble a unique
combination of capabilities on their single board platform,
which are essential for our customers who are managing
mobile assets and vehicle fleets."
The Thin Client is
the first StrongARM-based single board computer available
with the Microsoft Windows CE 2.1 operating system, which
gives the product a marketable intuitive graphics interface.
At its core is a powerful 32-bit StrongARM microprocessor
which allows very low power consumption, essential for
uses with mobile deployment. The third essential characteristic
is the Thin Client's ability to operate with industrial
operating temperatures. This temperature versatility allows
the SBC to be used in vehicles in northern states and
throughout the winter. Another feature of the system is
that it allows users to develop applications in Visual
Basic development system.
"ADS
and DCS have successfully collaborated on an array of
embedded requirements" said Robert Olsen, president
of Applied Data Systems. "By offering a low power
Windows CE-based solution that meets their comprehensive
IO demands yet still operates in the most rugged environments,
DCS has been able to offer their customers a powerful
product."
Running the Microsoft
Windows CE 2.1 operating system permits Diplomat to run
virtually any application for mobile assets. "The
Diplomat is a good example of how companies can use the
Windows CE platform to create new and useful enterprise
solutions," said Tony Barbagallo, group product manager
for Windows CE at Microsoft Corp. "Microsoft is working
to ensure that the Windows CE platform enables independent
software vendors and original equipment manufacturers
to continuously create innovative applications and devices."
"Integrated tracking
solutions using single-board computers are an excellent
fit for the high performance and low power of IntelÒ
StrongARMÒ
processors," said Mark D. Casey, director of marketing,
StrongARM products, at Intel Corporation. Using the StrongARM
SA-1100 /SA-1110 processor family gives ADS and DCS the
performance headroom to add new features and functions
within the same design."
"Diplomatâs integrated hardware and software solution
positions DCS to enter the mobile asset / vehicle tracking
market with a robust, affordable product with smart, cutting
edge technology," said Larry Waller, DCS.
