What is the ARM(R)?
Intel Corporation, Texas Instruments, NEC, Sharp, and
LG Semicon are among the biggest names in the worldwide
semiconductor market. Although these companies may compete
fiercely, they all share one thing - a licensing agreement
with ARM. And they are not alone. There are now nearly
20 major semiconductor manufacturers throughout the world
that have licensed the ARM architecture.
ARM was formed in November 1990 by Apple Computer, VLSI
Technology, and United Kingdom-based Acorn Computers and
has been growing at a steady clip ever since. ARM's yearly
revenues have continually produced 25+ percent over the
past five years.
The company's chip development has been fueled by the
anticipation of an electronics market that will produce
countless new venues for lightweight chips. Arm aims to
have its core chip architecture at the backbone of nonstandard
computing devices-everything from "smart" phones to Internet
appliances. Such devices typically run on batteries and
require chips with low power consumption. Not surprisingly,
ARM's RISC-based processors are known for their speed,
low cost, and power efficiency.
To maximize the penetration of its architecture, ARM
stands on the shoulders of its much larger partners. After
licensing the architecture, its semiconductor partners
do most of the costly legwork, like manufacturing and
marketing. They also integrate their own designs and develop
applications. Because ARM hands the intellectual property
to these partners, its standard architecture now appears
in a wide range of products and market segments. Such
diversification protects ARM against the weakness of any
one-market segment and also diffuses the threat of direct
competition.
